Landscaping in Orangevale

Large lots change the economics of a landscape project. Covering an Orangevale half-acre in the same finish level as a Folsom tract yard is rarely the plan. The design question here is usually where to concentrate: a defined, irrigated garden zone near the house, then a transition to low-input ground cover, native grasses, or managed oak understory across the rest. That approach costs a fraction of the equivalent full build-out and holds up better through the dry months.

Mature valley oaks are the single most important existing feature on many of these parcels, and they set hard rules for the design. Established native oaks do not tolerate regular summer irrigation near the trunk, and a lawn or a heavily watered bed installed under the canopy is one of the reliable ways to kill a tree that has stood for a century. Planting under oaks means keeping irrigation out of the root zone close to the trunk and choosing understory species adapted to dry summer shade.

Long irrigation runs bring their own problems: pressure loss across the run, low-head drainage at the bottom of a zone, and valve boxes that were installed thirty years ago and have since disappeared under six inches of soil. Locating and mapping the existing system is often the first day of an Orangevale irrigation project, and it is normal for that to turn up two or three zones nobody knew were still live.
