Shallow soil over bedrock rewrites the planting plan. Where an auger stops at fourteen inches, a tree that needs a deep root run is the wrong tree, and the alternative is not a smaller hole but a different species list plus raised planting areas built up above the rock. Raised beds and terraces built off the existing outcrops are the standard solution and often the best-looking one, because the stone gives the design a structure nothing else can.

Boulder work is a genuine speciality here rather than a decorative afterthought. Setting large stone so it reads as part of the ground rather than as an object placed on it means burying a third of the boulder, orienting the bedding planes consistently, and picking rock that matches what is already exposed on the lot. Done well nobody notices it; done badly it is the first thing anyone sees.

Drainage over shallow bedrock behaves differently from drainage in deep soil. Water moves laterally along the rock surface instead of percolating down, so a yard can be saturated in one corner and dry twenty feet away, and a drywell cut into rock does nothing at all. Surface grading and piped drains carried to a controlled outlet are usually the working answer, and knowing where the rock sits before designing the drainage is what keeps that from being discovered mid-project.
